This visual has its roots in the cover of a 1913 Michelin brochure entitled “Instruction plates”… “Michelin Man”, as he is known to Americans, invites us to attend a lecture he is delivering in the lecture hall of a prestigious university (possibly Princeton in New Jersey, which is close to Michelin’s Milltown plant). he young businessmen facing him, duly wearing ties or elegant bow ties, are listening intently. The graphic treatment of their faces is almost photographic in its precision, composing portraits of personalities that we could almost identify in that year’s local “Who’s Who”…
